If you’re a college student, your school probably made you put up a parking decal on your car. A few months or so later, when you needed to remove that decal to put another one in its place for the new semester, you found that it was the toughest sticker you’ve ever had on your car. The adhesive not only seemed permanently attached in certain areas, but it also kept tempting you to grab your car keys and scratch it out. However, even though such decals—or other stickers on your car for that matter — give you a hard time, we have a method to help you remove them once and for all without any remnants of the glue or any damage to the auto glass.
Simply follow our steps below:
Get Rid of Anything that Scrapes When many drivers need to remove decals or car stickers off of their auto glass, they tend to grab their car keys and scrape at the sticky paper. This is a very terrible way to remove stickers. First off, it scratches the glass (which costs money to fix). Second off, it helps peel off the paper but does not get rid of the glue on the window. Other objects people tend to use to remove decals and stickers are shaving razors and screwdrivers. Not only do these seem absurd, but just think of all the damage these can cause if you’re using them to scratch stickers off. Just be aware that if others on the internet recommend using these objects, it doesn’t mean that they know what they are talking about.
Spray the Area with Water After you’ve gotten rid of any tempting but dangerous tools, get a spray bottle and spray the area where the decal is with water. Or, you can simply wash your entire car and go from there. The way water works is that it softens the sticker just enough to help you add other products that do the rest of the removal.
Remove the Sticker/Decal from One Corner at a Time Next, start out by picking at one corner of the decal with your fingernail, moving diagonally toward the opposite corner. We’ve all done this before, so it shouldn’t be difficult. What can be difficult, though, is the sticker tearing up a little bit of the way through. You’ll just have to pick another corner and repeat this step until all corners are torn. Try your best to get as much of the paper off before the corners tear. Afterward, attempt to remove what remains of the paper with your fingernail. Don’t feel bad if you can’t get rid of it all.
Use Suitable Products to Ease the Removal Process There are a couple of products out there that are safe to use on auto glass. Some of these products are rubbing alcohol, acetone, and WD-40. We recommend that you use WD-40 because it was designed for the removal of such items as tar, bugs, stickers, and more; it is literally a penetrating oil that helps soften and wipe out unwanted elements. Take WD-40, or the other products mentioned, and rub or spray it on the decal. Then, leave the product to set for a minute or so.
Purchase and Use a Special Razor Blade While you let the WD-40 set, grab a special windshield-safe razor blade handle and use it to peel off the decal. You can find these razor blade handles in your local auto store. Though they are called “razor blades,” they are not your typical shaving razors. Therefore, they don’t damage the glass when you use them to remove stickers. What you need to do is take the special razor blade and gently slide it against the sticker, peeling it as you go. This should remove all the paper and glue remaining.
Clean the Glass Properly At the end, clean the glass as you would when you clean your car. Just be sure to use a microfiber cloth to wipe the glass. Whereas sponges and regular rags can scratch the glass, a microfiber cloth is soft, making it safe on car glass. Making sure to clean the glass properly at the end ensures that you wipe away any residue from the WD-40, acetone, or rubbing alcohol. At the same time, doing so keeps the glass in a great condition.
That’s all there is to this method. From now on, you shouldn’t dread removing any decals or stickers off of auto glass. With just the right tools and products, and a little patience, your car’s glass will be clean and back to its original condition.
