How to change apple id email

This email address is not available for use as an Apple ID

In this article, I’m going to show you what to do when your device says that ‘This email address is not available for use as an Apple ID’.

This message comes up in your settings when you’re trying to change your Apple ID email and it can be very frustrating if it’s the only other email you have.

By the end of this article, you should have gotten rid of this message.

When you’re trying to change your default email address for your Apple ID, you’re given a message saying that you can’t use the email address you provided.

This message says ‘This email address is not available for use as an Apple ID.

You may already have an Apple ID associated with this address.

Please try again or sign in using your existing Apple ID.’

Why does it Say, ‘This Email Address is not Available for use as an Apple ID’?

Your iOS device is trying to tell you that the email you’re trying to use for your Apple ID is already affiliated with the Apple ID email you’re currently using.

When making an Apple ID, you have to put in a secondary email address in case you forget the password for your primary email address or Apple ID.

I’m going to show you how you can make this email your Apple ID email and get rid of this message.

The first thing you need to do is to remove your secondary email associated with the Apple ID.

You need to look at your Apple ID settings and check if the email you’re trying to use as your primary email address for the Apple ID is being used as the secondary email for the current Apple ID.

If you do find that the email you’re trying to use as your primary Apple ID is already being used as a secondary email address for the Apple ID email, you need to remove that secondary email and use an email you don’t already use.

Once you do this, you’ll be able to set the old secondary email as the primary Apple ID email.

Once you make the change, you won’t see the message saying that you can’t use that email address for your Apple ID.

2. Try Another Email Address

If you’re trying to change your primary email address for your Apple ID, you can try using another email rather than using the one that already being rejected.

There may be an issue with the email you’re already trying to use so you can use another one.

If don’t have another email address, you can make another one.

3. Try using Another Companies Email

The next thing you can try and do is use another companies email.

For example, if you only make emails with Yahoo, you can try and switch to Gmail even though you’ve never owned a Gmail email.

There may be an issue with the companies email you’re trying to use which is stopping your iOS device from accepting the email.

If you do decide to use Gmail, you should try changing the domain to @googlemail.com rather than using Gmail, or vice versa.

This may be because your Apple ID doesn’t recognise the email you’re trying to use depending on the domain you put.

Bottom line

That’s what to do when your Apple ID email isn’t being accepted. If none of these steps worked for you, comment down below.

What to do if your email address is already being used with an Apple ID

If you see a warning that the email address you are trying to change to is already being used, it’s because another Apple ID is already attached to this account. Even if you don’t remember creating an account with it or create it yourself, it’s already being used. Okay? Now, let’s fix it.

You’ll need access to three email accounts for this process.

  • The email account associated with your active Apple ID.
  • The email account associated with the Apple ID you want to change your active Apple ID to (you don’t need to know any Apple ID password, but you will need to know the email password).
  • A third email account that can be used as a throw-away email (one that has not already been used as an Apple ID). You can create one before starting, or use an older email address that you don’t use anymore (but know the password for).

Step one: Get the password for the Apple ID associated with the email you want to change to

In order to get rid of the Apple ID that’s currently bogarting the email address you want to use, you’ll have to be able to access it. You can ask Apple to reset the password for the Apple ID associated with it.

  1. Navigate to iforgot.apple.com from any web browser.
  2. Enter the email address you want to switch your active Apple account to (the one you can’t currently change because it’s already being used).
  3. Type in the CAPTCHA characters to prove you aren’t a robot.
  4. Click or tap Continue.Enter the email address you want to switch to, then click Continue
  5. Select I need to reset my password.
  6. Click or tap Continue.Click I need to reset my password, then click continue
  7. Select Get an email.
  8. Click or tap Continue.Click Get Email, then click Continue
  9. Open the email you receive from Apple.
  10. Click or tap Reset now.
  11. Enter a new password.
  12. Reenter the new password.
  13. Click or tap Reset Password.Click Reset Password in the email, then enter the new password in the website field and click Reset Password

Now you know the password for the Apple ID that you don’t remember creating and don’t want to use anyway, so you can access it to make changes to it.

Step two: Change the email associated with the inactive Apple ID

Everything you did in Step 1 was so you can disassociate that email address from the inactive Apple ID. Now that you have access to it, you can change the email address associated with it to something you don’t care about. This is where you can use an old email address or a brand new one that you’ve just created for the sole purposes of using it for the inactive Apple ID.

Follow the steps for changing the email address associated with your Apple ID and use the Apple ID email address and password from Step 1 above. Change the email associated with that account to the throw-away email address.

Step three: Go back and change your active Apple ID email

Now that the email address you want to use for your active Apple ID is freed up, you can make the changes. Follow the steps for changing the email address associated with your Apple ID. This time, when you enter the new email address, you’ll actually be able to use the one you want.

What to do if you entered the wrong email address when you created an Apple ID

If you accidentally used the incorrect email address to create an Apple ID (for example, you used .com instead of .net), you can fix the mistake simply by changing the email address associated with your Apple ID.

Follow the steps for changing the email address associated with your Apple ID but use the incorrect email address to sign in. Once you’ve changed the email address, you’ll be right as rain.
