Oven Baked Ribs with green beans on one side and potatoes on the other.

News flash: oven baked ribs are THE BEST THINGS EVER! Seriously, baking ribs in the oven is nothing short of amazing.

For some strange reason, I always thought that ribs were best cooked on the BBQ or in a slow cooker. Wrong! Cooking ribs in the oven is the best way to make ribs all fall and winter long.

BAKED PORK RIBS

When I make ribs, it’s always pork ribs.  There are different types of pork ribs such as baby back ribs, spareribs, and St. Louis style ribs.  This recipe will work for every type of pork ribs…the cook time will just be longer for larger racks of ribs.

HOW TO MAKE RIBS IN THE OVEN:

  • 1-2 Racks Pork Ribs
  • BBQ Rib Rub
  • BBQ Sauce
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 300F.  Remove the ribs from the packaging and carefully remove the silver skin.

  2. Prepare a baking sheet with a rack, and you can line the baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.  Place the ribs on the rack and coat the ribs with the rub on all sides.  Be sure to pat the run in to form a crust.

  3. Cook the ribs in the oven for 2-3 hours.  For small racks, like baby backs, 2 hours should be sufficient.  Halfway through cooking, carefully wrap the rack with foil.

  4. When the ribs are finished cooking, a knife or a toothpick should pierce the thickest part of the ribs with ease.  Remove the foil.

  5. Set the oven broiler to HI.  Coat all sides of the ribs with BBQ sauce and place back in the oven for 5 minutes, or until the sauce starts to bubble.

  6. Let rest for 10 minutes and serve with extra sauce on the side.

What makes this pork ribs recipe the best?

I judge recipes based on three things:

  1. Is it delicious?
  2. Is it easy to make?
  3. Is it healthy?

As far as the healthy question goes, you'll find studies/experts/advice on both sides of the fence. I put meat (even the fattiest kind, like ribs) in the healthy category. It's real, unprocessed food that humans have been eating for hundreds of thousands of years. I personally feel good about eating it.

Is it delicious? Absofreakinglutely it is! You'll be craving these simple, country style pork ribs for days.

Is it easy to make? Very! The spice rib is made from a few pantry staple spices. Then, rather than slathering it in BBQ sauce, a drizzle of honey at the end is all it needs to brown the top. Bonus #1: there's no need to spend time making your own BBQ sauce. Bonus #2: You don't have to use a sugar-loaded, store-bought BBQ sauce.

When your baked ribs are super tender and your house smells AMAZING, take the foil off the ribs and brush a little honey on top of them.

Pop them under the broiler for a few minutes until they are brown and the sugar in the honey starts to caramelize.

Now pour yourself another glass of wine and dig into the best oven baked pork ribs ever!

  • 1 rack of pork back ribs
  • 1 teaspoon each: paprika, chili powder, onion powder, and coconut sugar (can sub brown sugar)
  • 1/2 teaspoon each: cumin, black pepper, and sea salt
  • A pinch of cayenne and cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 lbs. mini potatoes, cut in half
  • 1 lb. green beans, trimmed
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  1. Turn your oven to 300 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the ribs on top.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the paprika, chili powder, onion powder, coconut sugar, cumin, black pepper, sea salt, cayenne, and cinnamon. Sprinkle the spices over both sides of the ribs then cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil and put it in your oven.
  3. While the ribs are baking, cut the potatoes in half, trim the strings off the green beans and drizzle both with the oil. (keep the potatoes and beans separate.) After 1 hour and 20 minutes, remove the ribs from the oven, add the potatoes to the baking sheet, and sprinkle 3/4 teaspoon of salt over them. Put the foil back on the tray and put the tray in the oven.
  4. After 30 minutes, remove the tray from the oven. If the potatoes are soft, add the beans and sprinkle them with 1/4 teaspoon of salt. (If they're not, cook them for a few more minutes.)
  5. Turn your oven to broil and baste the honey on the ribs. Broil the ribs for 7-10 minutes, or until they are well browned.

Before adding the spices to the ribs, make sure that the membrane has been removed from the backside. If the thin skin is still on the ribs, use a paring knife to lift off a little then pull the rest off. It's a little slippery but it should come off in one piece.

If your oven broils at higher than 500 degrees, keep a very close eye on the ribs so they don't burn.
